The Orthopaedic Foundation and Immertec’s latest research evaluating the usability of Immertec’s virtual reality training platform was accepted for presentation at the 2021 ASE Annual Meeting
New York, NY, March 22, 2021 | Dr. Stephanie Petterson of the Orthopaedic Foundation and Drs. Shannon Bailey and Richard Friedland of Immertec were recently accepted to present their latest research at the Association for Surgical Education (ASE) 2021 Annual Meeting. The accepted podium presentation shares the results of testing the usability of Immertec’s real-time virtual reality training platform with orthopedic surgeons.
The ASE 2021 Annual Meeting will take place virtually from April 29 through May 1. The annual meeting will feature panels, lectures, and abstract presentations on the latest in surgical education.
The Orthopaedic Foundation and Immertec have an ongoing research partnership to evaluate the usability of Immertec’s Medoptic virtual reality (VR) training platform from the surgeon’s perspective. Medoptic is a software platform supported by hardware that streams live 3D content from the operating room. The platform has three features: a mobile scheduling app, VR headsets loaned to users to remote into live events and real-time stereoscopic teleconferencing for collaboration with surgeon instructors and peers.
“It is important for us to continue to research the best way surgeons can utilize remote training alternatives. We look forward to sharing our research at this year’s annual meeting to continue to evaluate the potential of VR training platforms for surgical education,” said Dr. Shannon Bailey of Immertec.
The first research initiative, held at the Orthopaedic Foundation’s bioskills lab in Manhattan, NY, included 13 orthopaedic surgeons participating in a live cadaveric demonstration of a total shoulder arthroplasty using the platform from various remote locations across the US. The research validated the usability of Immertec’s Medoptic system compared to industry benchmark standards.
